Established in 1960, Motilal Nehru Law College, Khandwa, stands as the first law college of Khandwa district and the entire Nimar region. The institution was founded in response to a pressing regional need—at the time, aspiring law students were compelled to travel to distant cities such as Indore and Nagpur to pursue legal education, a burden that placed higher education beyond the reach of many economically disadvantaged students.

Recognising this challenge, a group of eminent lawyers of Khandwa, led by the senior-most advocate Late Shri Radhakrishna Gupta, along with fifteen committed members of the Khandwa District Bar Association, took the visionary initiative to establish a local institution dedicated to legal education. Their collective effort laid the foundation for a college rooted in accessibility, service, and academic excellence.

The college was established during the centenary year of the birth of Advocate Pandit Motilal Nehru, whose legacy of legal brilliance and public service inspired the institution’s name. The Government of Madhya Pradesh extended vital support by allotting land for the campus, while generous contributions from local philanthropists, firms, societies, and the founder members of The Law Education Society, Khandwa, enabled the construction of the college building. In its formative years, founder members and senior advocates volunteered their services by teaching without remuneration, ensuring that quality legal education remained affordable and inclusive.

Motilal Nehru Law College received recognition and affiliation from the Government of Madhya Pradesh and Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar, and later, in 1995, transitioned its affiliation to Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya, Indore, in keeping with evolving academic and regulatory standards. As in 2026, the college is affiliated to KrantiSurya Tantya Bhil University, Khargone. The college is duly approved by the Bar Council of India, New Delhi, under the provisions of the Advocates Act, and adheres to the highest norms of professional legal training.

Celebrating 65 years of academic excellence (1960–2025), Motilal Nehru Law College continues to serve as a pillar of legal education in the region. With a steadfast commitment to quality education, social responsibility, and community service, the institution has empowered generations of legal professionals who contribute meaningfully to the justice delivery system and society at large.
